The Number Every Salon Owner Needs to Know - Your Break-Even Hourly Rate

By The Salon Social Collective

Let me ask you a question.

Do you know the exact number your salon needs to make each week just to break even?

Not the number you hope to make.

Not the number you made on your best week last month.

I mean the actual number your business must generate before you even make a dollar of profit.

Because here’s the truth most salon owners don’t realise.

Many salons are busy… but not actually profitable.

And the reason is almost always the same.

They don’t know their numbers.

They don’t know what it truly costs to run their salon, and they definitely don’t know what they need to be earning per hour behind the chair.

So they guess.

They price based on competitors.

Or they just hope the books stay full enough to keep things afloat.

But hope is not a pricing strategy.

And if you want to build a salon that pays you properly, supports your life, and doesn’t burn you out, there is one number you need to understand first.

Your break-even number.

What “Break Even” Actually Means in a Salon

Break-even simply means this:

The amount of money your salon needs to make to cover all expenses.

Not profit.

Not growth.

Just survival.

It includes things like:

Rent
Wages
Superannuation
Products and colour
Software subscriptions
Insurance
Utilities
Marketing
Stock
Education
Tax

Basically, everything required to keep the salon doors open.

Once those costs are covered, then you can start generating profit.

But here’s where most salon owners run into trouble.

They have no idea what their break-even number actually is.

Which means they also don’t know if their pricing is sustainable.

Why Most Salon Owners Feel Financially Stressed

If you’ve ever thought:

“I’m so busy… but the money doesn’t reflect it.”

You’re not alone.

Many salon owners are working incredibly hard but still feel financially stretched because they haven’t been taught how to run their numbers properly.

This creates a cycle that looks like this:

Work more hours
Take more clients
Push harder

But the real issue isn’t always workload.

It’s pricing clarity.

And pricing clarity starts with understanding the minimum your business must generate each week.

Step 1 - Work Out Your Monthly Salon Overheads

Your overheads are the fixed costs required to run your salon.

This includes things like:

Salon rent or lease
Electricity and utilities
Insurance
Software systems
Accounting fees
Subscriptions
Stock and product orders
Cleaning
Marketing costs

Many salon owners underestimate their overheads because they forget about the smaller recurring expenses.

The sneaky subscriptions.

The software tools.

The monthly stock orders.

But these costs add up quickly.

And until you know your true overheads, it’s impossible to price services properly.

Step 2 - Convert That Number Into a Weekly Target

Once you know your monthly expenses, divide that number by four.

This gives you the minimum weekly revenue required to keep the salon running.

For example:

Monthly salon expenses = $20,000

Weekly break-even target = $5,000

This means your salon must generate $5,000 per week just to cover costs.

No profit yet.

Just survival.

Now here’s where it gets interesting.

Step 3 - Work Out Your Actual Working Hours

This is where many salon owners have a bit of an aha moment.

Ask yourself:

How many hours do you actually work behind the chair each week?

Not the hours your salon is open.

Your real service hours.

Let’s say you work:

32 hours per week with clients.

Now we take the weekly break-even number and divide it by your working hours.

Step 4 - Calculate Your Break-Even Hourly Rate

Using our example:

Weekly break-even target: $5,000
Hours worked: 32

$5,000 ÷ 32 =$156 per hour

This means your salon needs to generate $156 per hourjust to cover costs.

No profit.

No owner bonus.

Just break even.

Now imagine your current average hourly revenue is $110.

You’re effectively losing money every hour you work.

This is why some salons feel constantly financially tight even when they’re fully booked.

Their pricing simply doesn’t support the real cost of running the business.

The Moment Most Salon Owners Realise Something Isn’t Adding Up

When salon owners calculate their real hourly number for the first time, two things usually happen.

First, there’s a moment of shock.

Because the number is often higher than expected.

And second, there’s relief.

Because suddenly the financial stress makes sense.

It wasn’t that they were bad at business.

It wasn’t that they weren’t working hard enough.

They simply didn’t have visibility on their numbers.

And you can’t fix what you can’t see.

Why This Number Changes Everything

Once you know your break-even hourly rate, it becomes much easier to make smart business decisions.

You can start asking better questions.

Are my services priced appropriately?

Are some services costing me money?

Am I booking my time effectively?

Is my salon menu aligned with my revenue targets?

This number becomes the foundation for everything:

Pricing strategy
Service menu design
Team productivity
Financial planning

Without it, you’re essentially flying blind.

The Truth About Pricing Confidence

Many salon owners think confidence around pricing comes from mindset.

But confidence usually comes from clarity.

When you understand your numbers, pricing stops feeling emotional.

It becomes strategic.

You know what your business needs to generate.

You know what your time is worth.
